I don't have any idea how to do that... maybe the "any" object will
work.
It's of course incorrect for Gem to use A_POINTER this way -- I'd suggest
changing it so that the gemhead temporarily binds it to a symbol (#gem?)
so that 'square' etc can get a reference back to it.
