The ugly kludge is used in the test/RC versions(branch-v0-39-2- 
extended), just not in 0.40.2 yet (HEAD/MAIN of Pd-extended).  I'm  
not going to port the kludge, it was a mistake to port it from 0.38.4  
to 0.39.2, so I am not going to repeat that mistake.
