Another possibility that is seen sometimes in svn-repositories would
be this:

  /pd/trunk/
  /pd/tags/
  /pd/branches/
  ...
  /doc/trunk/
  /doc/tags/
  /doc/branches/

I just want to mention this, I didn't contemplate dis/advantages of
this one vs. your suggestion at all so far.
