Summary: "pdsend"  broken

Initial Comment:
in the latest and greatest pd-extended release (.tar.bz2!) on a debian system, the installed "pdsend" application crashes with "floating point exception".

the version installed by debian's "puredata" package works just fine.

I think the ALSA dependency is probably due to Pd just using one linking
statement for everything. While this is imperfect behavior, it would
probably mean redoing the Pd makefile. That needs doing for sure, but I
don't think this case is the reason to do it.

As for installing Pd-extended on Debian without replacing the 'puredata'
package, you can uncompress a .deb using 'dpkg -x', then install it
wherever you want. but then because of the way Pd finds its libs and docs,
you'd have to run pd like:

cd /path/to/my/extracted/pd-extended/bin
./pd

i know kinda found out why the planetccrma package was installed:
the user has a running and stable pd installed (as debian package
"puredata"), and had no intention to swap this for a system they did not
know at all (in terms of quality)

so they tried to avoid the debian package which would potentially
overwrite their installation (which it does not, but how would anybody
know?)

to chose the fc/ccrma precompiled binaries was certainly a bad decision
(they seem to not have found the "source" package at first glance)

btw, i unpacked the ccrma-package on my debian machine (lenny/sid;
2.6.21-1-multimedia-486 on an amd64 in legacy mode) and pd-extended's
pdsend did _not_ crash.

nevertheless i noticed following:
dependencies for my "vanilla" pdsend
$ ldd /usr/bin/pdsend
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7d8e000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7ef8000)

dependencies for the "extended" pdsend
$ ldd Pd-0.39.3-extended/bin/pdsend
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0xb7ee6000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0xb7ec0000)
        libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7ea9000)
        libasound.so.2 => /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 (0xb7de2000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7c9a000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f0c000)

probably the problem lies with some of the (void) dependencies; why does
pdsend need alsa?

see group: "v0.39.2" (which is btw is not fully correct as it is 0.39.3)

the problem does not happen on my machine, so i cannot provide all the
information needed :-)

anyhow, here is what i know:
 pd    : Pd-0.39.3-extended-planetccrma6-i386.tar.bz2
 system: Linux version 2.6.18-5-686 (Debian 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch4)
 arch  : ibm-notebook (i686); don't remember anything else

don't ask me why the planetccrma-package was installed on a debian
machine.
