[PD-dev] making 0.40-extended branch tomorrow

FYI: I am going to create the 0.40-extended branch tomorrow, unless  
someone is about to check in a bunch of changes.  If there are any  
changes after the branch is made that should be included, they can be  
merged in without much difficulty.
