i can only speak for Gem, which doesn't need it (strictly speaking, Gem 
_needs_ very few libraries; noteably openGL, GLU come to my mind; all 
the rest is optional; having said that, removing libpng3 will not (to my 
knowledge) reduce the functionality of Gem in any way)
