well, you can download tarballs directly via the viewvc interface: e.g. 
getting the hottest zexy (and zexy alone) without any knowledge of svn, 
just use 
http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/trunk/externals/zexy.tar.gz
(you will find a "Download GNU tarball" to a dynamically created tarfile 
for every subdirectory at (e.g.) 
http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/trunk/
