Hi Iohannes,
the object count of canvasindex defaults to the parent patch. in the help patch you have [canvasindex 1] in a subpatch, which would refer to the grand parent. I don't know if the help patch is wrong (although in the comments it says parent) or the object should default to the current canvas.
I used the help patch that Luke Iannini posted in December.
