Initial Comment:
support for staged installs (i.e. using $(DESTDIR) variable in Makefile) is broken.

what I mean is that some items are installed into $(DESTDIR), while some other are installed to /

perhaps, some time ago the Makefile used to support staged installs, but then someone forgot to add $(DESTDIR) to new install items?


staged installs are very important, read here why:
http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/html_node/DESTDIR.html

(for example it breaks the installation of Gentoo - luckily I already patch pd into the ebuild)
