You can have an external (in fact, I use one[1]) that links libstdc++, 
and load it into Pd before anything else, which "works" - but it's much 
more fragile and hoop-jumping for users who just want something that 
works, how many times can you debug ~/.pdsettings or ~/.pdrc for users 
who don't care why C++ exceptions cause crashes when they use Gem or 
whatever...
