Summary: make clean is really slow

Initial Comment:
Seems to be calling a configure script that's doing dependency checking every time it moves into a new directory. The majority of the time spent running a "make clean" is spent in configure scripts.

this is with the June 6, 2010 nightly-build src rsynced from the build farm. the task was run from the packages/linux_make subdir.

Message:
Yeah, its pretty well know that some parts of the Pd-extended build system
are very kludgey. But with the new Makefile template being used for a lot
of libraries, that should make things like "make clean" work better. But
now, when I need a clean for the whole Pd-extended build tree, I use rsync,
same with the nightly build scripts.
