Initial Comment:
Along with the [widget] object's inability to handle dollarsign variables correctly, this severely limits the flexibility of the [widget] object.  For example, you can't initialize a [widget]'s values using loadbang, nor can you use one in an abstraction and send data to it (like you can with [tgl]).
