tested in 0.43.0-devel-20100126 and 0.42-5 on winxp. Sending an initial bang before setting $s1 to a value crashes pd.

the problem comes from ISTABLE() correctly checking for a NULL-symbol, but
then accessing the s_name field anyhow.
attached patch fixes this
