Initial Comment:
in 0.43.test2, the veresion number is not printed correctly when running "pd -version".
rather than the version number, it prints "(null)", since the version string is uninitialized (and luckily set to NULL)

the attached patch fixes this.
(it's a git patch, so apply with "gem am 0001-provide-a-version-string.patch")
