because you need a c++ compiler to compile c++ code.

and you need a c++ linker to link with c++ objects (such as the
portaudio objects)
the trick to use g++ for linking, is to use a dummy .cpp file, so
autotools will automatically choose g++.

something like:

if PORTAUDIO
nodist_EXTRA_pd_SOURCES += dummy.cpp
endif
