No, must eat my words. The Makefile for darwin_app in the autobuild has:

export MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET = 10.4

Theoretically the 10.6 build should support older OS'es, also with
respect to lib loading. Pity it doesn't work in practice. Found no
useful hint for the specific case yet.

Will now try to produce a 'nightly' build on my OSX 10.5 laptop.
