i checked on linux, and while i can reproduce the problem here, i have
to say that i have exactly the same behaviour with Pd-vanilla
(0.43.1test2, 0.43.2, 0.44.0test0).

i didn't really set out to eliminate bugs in the current
implementation of backends, but rather to separate backends.

so...does portaudio device selection work on Pd-vanilla under OSX?
