as much as i personally love autotools, i'm not convinced that the
current situation is any good.
having two independent build-systems is bound for trouble, as they
will always slightly diverge.

if the automake based system is too complicated and thus not used by
"upstream" (that is: you), there is little use in keeping it lying around.
i'm not sure whether the "alternative" build-system works on all
platforms though.
