 For absolute beginners, the MAX Primer may probably be of help. It is
available from IRCAM (<http://www.ircam.fr>  ..forgot the full link)
or at <http://gige.epy.co.at/pd/Max_Primer.html>.

The user interface is a little bit different, but the concept is the
same.
