On this subject:

so, assuming i ve identical filesystem under $PD_HOME, i dont have to
change anything for pd to find all its files ...

OK but in this situation you might be able to make the filenames relative,
like "control/%d.tab" so that the patches will work no matter where
you put them, on any machine at all.

There might be other good reasons to be able to slap environment variables
into object boxes...  anyone?
