[PD] Newbie question

Hello. I'm a new pd user, and am wondering if there is any detailed manual
out there, written in as plain english as possible, on pd, how to develop
for it, etc.

Also, does anyone know of a simple, ready to go, live sound-effect
processor file - flange, sweep, etc. The examples that come with pd seem
to work only on pre-recorded samples, and I don't know yet how to build my
own file.
