[PD] gem startup

  The first error

GEM: Only using 8 color bits

means that GEM was only able to find a display which has 8 bit colors...I
used to see this warning on old SGI Indys which didn't have the graphics
upgrade.  You should still be able to work, but you will see a lot of
banding.

  I am not certain about the other message...in gemwin, the color message
only has 3 arguments...

  Which version of GEM are you using?  and which platform?
