[PD] open menuclose abstraction + GEM

  If you turn off a render chain, then no rendering occurs at all down the
chain (ie, the gemhead returns immediately on the render call instead of
running the chain).

  If you have textures, etc. then they are still occupying RAM, but they are
likely to be paged out very quickly.
