[PD] newbie: no MIDI in...

Hi all.  I'm running the latest pd on Win98se, with an SBLive and Echo Mia.

Loading pd, no switches gives me:
"midiInOpen: MMSYSTEM002 A device ID has been used that is out of range for 
your
system."

I just need MIDI In, MIDI Out, and Audio Out of the Mia, all of which are 
#1's on the -listdev listing.

After using Max/MSP for the past few years, I'm really looking forward to 
digging into pd.  Since pd has control of multiple outs, has anyone created 
any surround patches?
