i've had the same problem.. but only with a little mixer :)... first time
i connected to a real PA i was deathly frightened that i might have to do
the whole show on battery power but it turned out not to be the case.

i think i later concluded that it was more of a problem with the other
devices i had plugged into the mixer... (a desktop pc with notorious
earthing-problems)

i mono-boot linux for religious reasons ;)

i can't think of (m)any externals that are linux-only... although maybe
the piperead/write externals that are necessary for mp3-streaming.
