It should be in GemLibs/particle/libparticle.a

You try to link it from gem-0.86/src/AuxLibs/particle, which is not the
particle library for 0.87. ldconfig won't help, as the GemLibs
probably aren't "installed" in a ldconfig-controlled directory.
Something's wrong in your Makefile...
