[PD] pd audio glit t t t ches

hi!

short intro:
  i am new to pd but have been making things with max/msp and 
supercollider for a little while_ primarily for realizing my own music 
and sound works.

reason i m writing this:
  i am getting very glitchy (unintentional) audio output from any pd 
patch i run (including the basic sinewave demo). my setup is ->

pismo powerbook
640mb
os x 10.2.2

another curiosity of this problem is that changing the system volume 
via the keyboard also produces audio dropouts.

has anyone else had problems with this? need more info?
