[PD] [gem] message-based OpenGL

i'm a GEM newbie as well and i'd like to undertake some steps into the
OpenGL world.
The last time i had a (short) look into GEM i had the impression that every
object in space has its representation as a PD object.
Is this true or is it also possible to design and control OpenGL objects in
a message-based manner?
