Okay, I messed up big time, but the solution is simply a wrong
ordering of arguments. This one really should work now, I even tested
it: 

% cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.pure-data.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data co -r devel_0_36 pd 

If one, like me, has done this once, he's only doing "cvs update"
afterwards...
