Sorry to polute the list with this, but I've answered my own question...

cc -bundle -undefined suppress -flat_namespace -o ann.pd_darwin ann.o
ann.o ann_som.o
ld: multiple definitions of symbol _ann_new

should have told me that multiple ann.o were being called (2)...

so, just calling:

DARWINEXTERNALS = ann_som.o

worked fine.
