[PD] homonymous externals, how to deal with?

how are developers handling externs being duplicated? i have two versions of counter and two versions of prepend, for example. can i specify which library an instance of an externs is taken from?

i think the GEM counter is used in a lot of my patches, but i prefer the cyclone max-style counter. what can be done?

i believe the issue was addressed before, but i was unclear on the solution.
