[PD] writing my own pd?

Hello,

Can anyone point me in a good direction for learning more about the design
of systems like PD and Max/MSP?  I'm interested in understanding these
systems on a more abstract level in programming terms.  Kind of a computer
science perspective on their design... So far I've looked through the code a
bit for PD and jMax but documentation on how these systems are put together
would be really cool, if that even exists!
