there is a pix_chroma_key in the CVS version of GEM, which keys/masks 
two images based on color values in a given range.  there are 
binaries available for Windows (http://www.bogusfront.org) and OSX 
(http://taproot.dyndns.org/~cgc/) or you can build it from source on 
Linux (or the other two platforms for that matter).

not sure about the jittering problem.  which OS are you using?
