it's possible that you could find the component separately, but even if
you were able to find the screen, the trick would getting an interface to
it that you could use. i don't think you are likely to save too much money
by trying to build something yourself here.

in the case of the webcams, you can get the iris with video out because
the idea of getting a ccd and generating video signal from it is really
common, and so it's all manufactured on one chip. but the most common way
of getting data into an lcd is not with a video signal and certainly not
with usb. if you found the component it would probably use a lower level
lcd driver for such a small embedded component.
