[PD] which canvases open on patch startup?

Yes, that's right.

This is the reason why I used to put UI canvases of abstractions in
sub-patches of the abstraction and open them on request. That is the
abstraction gets a bang somehow (inlet or receive) and in turn opens its
subpatch. 

There may be other messages but that's the way I did.
