[PD] Gem install on mandrake 9.1

Hi...
I know I know... it's a bore to answer the same questions all the time... forgive me!
I am installing gem 0.87 on a linux box under mandrake 9.1... I can't find the installation /compile instructions in the package and those provided don't work. Can somebody direct me to a FM to read?
Or also generic hints are welcome.
I have loaded the gemlib, and followed instructions provided...
