[PD] What kind of processing would you call this?

Hi,

I made a simple little patch that takes an incoming signal, and a scalar.
It scales the signal by the scalar and then feeds it to a cos~ with a couple
of little manipulations to make the mapping be to the sine function instead
of the cosine function.

My question is, what is this? It's like waveshaping, but it uses the sine
function so you can scale the input signal however much you want, and you
always get an output value that is between -1 and 1. One of my profs said
that it might be akin to FM, but we didn't talk much about it. Is this a
common processing technique?

The patch is online at http://www.sphericle.com/pd/sinshap~.pd if anyone
wants to look at it.

Thanks!
Chad
