[PD] env~ with signal-outlet?

hi 
 
for several applications like compressors, vocoders or something else it would be useful to have an object that outputs the signal-volume.
the problem with env~ is that the time-interval between two numbers is too long for using it for example in compressors.
does anybody know an object with a signal-outlet or another solution for this problem?
i wonder how people realized a good compressor with pd.
