My externals are taking care of delimiters (carriage return, linefeed, 
space, comma or other user defined codes) and also check for invalid 
characters. It's certainly possible to do the same with fancy patches, 
but I preferred to address the problem in C with the help of the flext 
library for portability. It doesn't solve all serial communication 
issues, but it's a good start.
