[PD] GEM video formats linux etc

Hi,
I know that GEM for linux supports .mov and .mpg
videos, but what compression schemes etc?

I've got some .VOB files (from dvd) that I want to
convert into some format to be able to use with GEM,
anyone have any suggestions? (I'm using linux)... I've
tried using dvdrip and then making mpg files but the
video is all green, small and doubled.
