thats why it is a good idea to customize knoppix for that - the detection 
stuff is already there, and its not too hard to modify the cd-image. its a 
compressed filesystem.

that works, as long as you dont want a x-windows interface.
for x, you need to create a .xinitrc in the knoppix user's homedir which 
starts the x-win applications after the x-server has finished starting up. 
(see "man xinit" or "man startx")
