why not -- in your project's tree include a file, say "pd_imp.h",
with

#ifdef PD_MINOR_VERSION
#include "m_imp.h"
#else
<stripped down copy of m_imp.h taken from 0.36 --
  it is frozen, after all...>
#endif

then in your extern's source file put

#include "m_pd.h"
#include "pd_imp.h"
...
