what is displayed ?
sometimes (don`t know remember on which machines...) i get this warning 
too, but it still works.
could it be, that there is something wrong with your norm/channel 
options (PAL is the default).
  the signal is read from channel1, probably you are using svhs or 
composite3 ?)

well, i guess you don't have the device /dev/ieee1394/dv/host0/NTSC/in .
a) are you using devfs ? (i suggest to do so)
b) have you installed the dv1394.so-module ? (modprobe dv1394). the 
linux/dv-support depends on this driver.
