[PD] No sound in debian

hi pd-list!
After using PD in Windows XP for more than a year with no problem, I tried to
install PD in Debian Linux - but no sound comes out from the speakers!
Kernel-2.4.22 and ALSA 0.9.7c are there installed and working, so it should be
a problem of PD 0.37 not seeing ALSA? "pd -listdev" returns 1 OSS card for
input/ouput and "pd -alsa" doesn't seem to help.
Any clue?
