Christopher,
You might try this as a substitute.  Download SimpleSynth at:

http://pete.yandell.com/software/

Set up the IAC bus in Audio MIDI setup (/Applications/Utilities)
Then open PD and SimpleSynth.
Set SimpleSynth to receive MIDI on the IAC BUS 1.
Then set the MIDI out of PD to IAC BUS 1.

MIDI notes should go from PD==>SimpleSynth.
