[PD] copy and paste??

ok please dont kill me as this might be really a stupid question, but Is
there any way of copy and pasting from one pd patch to another that it is
not the same file, 
as in Ive no probs copying and pasting within the one file file but just say
I open a new file and try and paste absolutely nothing happens, its like
each file has its own cache
