indeed - a big A-HA on me :)  i still *do* have to do lot's of futzing
with GoP objects.  it initially seemed like adding canvases would bind
the GoP objects to canvas size (minimum size, it does...) but i was
wrong.  oh well.  it still makes patches a lot easier on the eyes.
