[PD] problems at installing apt from Planet CCRMA........

Make sure you are root, and that you don't have another apt-enabled
program running. The "cannot get exclusive lock" error message is one
that I get when I am running synaptic (in order to browse the files on
planet CCRMA) and then doing apt-get from the command-line at the same
time (since synaptic sometimes fails to install packages properly for me
- ends up hanging). So what I do is to first browse with synaptic to
find out the names of the packages I want, then quit synaptic, and use
"apt-get install <packagename>" from the command line to actually
install them.
