[PD] 1394 firewire video capture with pdp + linux

How can I get pdp_v4l to capture from a firewire DV camera? I tried first:

modprobe videodev

then send pdp_v4l the message:

"open /dev/video1394/0"

but pdp reports:

pdp_v4l: opening /dev/video1394/0
get capabilties: Invalid argument
