You could try this loadwav~ abstraction: 
(http://iem.kug.ac.at/mailinglists/pd-list/2004-03/020245.html). Instead 
of soundfiler, it is using readsf~ (to avoid dropouts). When complete 
silence is detected the audio switches over to write on both channels. 
It has worked well for me in performance.
